The Northwest Sacred Music Chorale will present its Spring Concert at First Presbyterian Church, 521 E. Lakeside, Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 20, 2008 at 2:00 p.m.
The concert will feature the Chorale performing a sacred vocal jazz work, The Sacred Cantata by Michael Kissinger, with popular Coeur d'Alene baritone, Max Mendez, as its soloist, accompanied by a three-piece instrumental jazz ensemble.
The The Sacred Cantata is made up of eight movements, each with a unique message based on biblical text. The first movement is 'In The Beginning,' followed by' God Spoke,' 'Psalm 136,' ' A Man On The Water,' ' Come To Me,' ' Did I Hear My Lord?,' ' The Way,' and 'Fishermen Of Men.' The concert will also spotlight many well-known spirituals sung by the Chorale and the Select Ensemble.
The first movement of 'The Sacred Cantata' uses the text from the Gospel of John and is sung a cappella for the first portion of this piece. Then, in a most gentle and flowing manner, the piano and bass are brought in to support the simple but effective harmonies.
The second movement of 'The Sacred Cantata,' was written with respect to and in the style of the great gospels of Jester Hairston and William Dawson. It is scored for choir and tenor soloist but would be appropriate for any solo voice. The soloist describes biblical stories about characters that served the Lord by obeying His commands. The choir joins the soloist at each refrain and plays the role of the congregation, depicting biblical scenes including Noah, Moses, David and Jesus. A bright, uplifting gospel with a dynamic piano accompaniment.
The Cantata proceeds through the next five movements, each different and uplifting before concluding with the finale, "Fishermen of Men." This exciting finale to 'The Sacred Cantata' builds and builds by adding vocal sections. The tenors begin and then are joined by the sopranos, basses and finally the altos to make this selection wonderful conclusion to this beautiful cantata.
